Important! First TEAM UNITE Strategy for DC! Please post this on all of your sites and send to as many people as you can.  I’ll do my best to keep these strategies simple and not very time consuming.  This will provide us with a tool that will raise our voices in unison for our beautiful and brave warriors and angels.

We must get S 911 moved to the senate floor for a vote so that it can pass the Senate and go to the house for a vote.  You can go to www.thomas.gov and look at the bill and status if you’d like.  Some are asking when we leave for DC….Hold your horses because before we plan our trip to DC we have phone work to do!

There are currently 51 cosponsors of S 911 including Senator Reed (Sponsor). We need to get 16 more cosponsors to help push this to the floor for a vote and on to the house for a vote.

Here is our first task as a team.  Tuesday, February 12th we all need to call Senator John McCain’s office. His phone number is: (202) 224-2235. Tell the person that answers that we need them to deliver a message to Senator McCain.  Ask that he cosponsor the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act S 911. Let them know that we are aware that he is the only person who is running for President who is not a cosponsor of S 911. Please note, if you do not live in Arizona when they ask for your zip code please be sure to stress to them that this Law is of personal and NATIONAL concern and you want your message delivered to the senator. Be firm about this!

Please also send a letter to John McCain via his website at http://mccain.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Contact.ContactForm  You can access a sample letter at Click here for sample letter but please customize the letter if you have time. If not, it is better to send the form letter than not to send one all. This is our chance to make it personal.  TELL YOUR STORY and all of our TEAM’s about the little ones who are fighting and who have fought this beast!

By the way, has anyone notice the number of the bill? 911…We need this to be passed PRONTO!!!!

Please send me your email address and your home state if you’d like to be part of this team (if you haven’t already).  I will add you to my database and that way we will have team members listed by state for future strategies. We will list a new strategy as often as possible (hopefully everyday).

Please do not forget to call Senator McCain on Tuesday, February 12th . Thank you for your help!

Please note, if long distance charges are a problem, use the Capitol switchboard 800 numbers and ask for the senator by name. Be patient these lines stay pretty busy!

Important! Here are our group calls for Wednesday, February 13, 2008. These senators are NOT cosponsors of S 911. Please note, Senator Michael Enzi is first on our list because he is the individual who has put a hold on our bill. When you call his office please be sure to mention that we have 50 cosponsors and 1 sponsor and we need him to remove this hold and cosponsor S 911. Americans want this bill to be sent to the senate floor for a vote!

In addition to phone numbers I have enclosed a hyperlink to email each person. Below our daily list is some information to help those who may feel uncomfortable calling. We want to make this easy for you so let us know what else you need! And, if you haven’t already please send me your email address and state you reside in for our database dkillian@helmsbriscoe.com. Thank you for your help!

If you are new to the site or just new to the world of childhood cancer here is some information that will help you get started with our goal of getting S 911 The Conquer Childhood Cancer Bill signed into law and finding a cure for this beast!

Team Unite we need help so ANY call or letter you send WILL help whether it is 1 or 10 please at least make that 1 call for the children and their families and friends’ sake. If you need help please ask we all started some where. No question is stupid LOL believe me I should know:) I thank you but most importantly the children thank you!

First let me tell you that I was scared when I started making calls!!! The reason being I had never made a single phone call to a legislator's office in my life! I had no clue about the process of how bills became law and frankly didn't have any desire to learn. But then I was personally hit hard when Henry Tucker was killed by cancer. Everything changed at that point and I knew I had to get involved and make a change, no doubt about it. After talking with many of my family and friends I started to realize that all of the people I was calling were actually paid to help me! Wow what a different perspective I had once I realized they were providing a service to me. Most everyone you will hear on the other end of the line when you call is hired specifically to take calls and make record of your call. As time went on it got easier and easier talking to these folks, knowing they were actually there to help me:) Yes every so often you get the person that forgot to eat their Wheaties but for the most part they are pretty nice.

So at first I would simply call and say " My name is _______ and I am calling to ask Senator _____ to cosponsor and vote yes for S 911 the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act". They would say thank you for calling and I will pass your information on to the Senator and that was it!!! Remember if you are not from the senator’s home state and they ask for your zip code just tell them this is a national and personal issue and you want your message delivered. Mission accomplished!

Now you have the basics and I hope it will help! I now consider myself a conversation piece because I offer a whole lot more to the person on the other end of the phone. One thing for certain is you don't have to be scared of talking to these people they are there to take our calls.

If anyone needs help with what to say or what to write just send me an email and I will be happy to offer any information that I have available.

You can call the Capitol switchboard 800 numbers and ask for the senator by name. Be patient these lines stay pretty busy!

As we begin our second week together as a team let’s reflect on our successes!

Together we have completed 4 strategies, contacted 23 Senators both by phone and via letter/email and, we witnessed a new cosponsorship come on board.

Congratulations on a great week everyone!

We have 52 (counting our sponsor) so we have 8 more to go in order to over ride the hold Senator Enzi of Wyoming has on our Bill and get it to the Senate floor for a vote. So, whether you made 46 POC’s (points of contact (23 letters/23calls)) or 1 POC last week, you are making a difference!  Every single call, letter or email is so important in getting this Bill passed so thank you for what you are doing. You’re all WONDERFUL!

Once we call all of the Senators on our list we will go back and target some who are tough ones (Voinovich, DeMint, Enzi, folks on the appropriations committees who even when S911 is passed into Law have the power to decide how much $$$ is really appropriated!). Then we will begin adding folks onto our calls from the House side.

I need your feedback TEAM UNITE so please drop me an email at dkillian@helmsbriscoe.com and let me know of any media you come across with respect to S911.  Also, please let me know if you feel we should target our efforts to a certain Senator or House member and why.

*7 Calls for Strategy 5 Tuesday, February 19, 2008*

There was magic in the air on Thursday February 14th as Senator Richard Durbin of IL became our 51st Cosponsor! I know many of you out there really could use good news and something to be thankful for, so our first call two calls of the week will be thank you calls!

*****NEW: More Detailed Sample Script for Calling Senators on S911 the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act:****

Hello, my name is <<Your Name>>. The reason for my call is that I’ve noticed that Senator <<Senator Name>> is not yet listed as a cosponsor of S.911, “The Conquer Childhood Cancer Act”. Can you please take a brief message and make sure the Senator is made aware of my call and that I’d like to ask that he cosponsor and vote yes for S. 911?"

Thank them and then ask what <<Senator Name>>’s position is on S 911. They may say that the Senator has not issued a public announcement regarding his position on S.911 or they may also send you the aid in charge of S.911. If that happens, great! Jot down that person’s name because you are most likely going to go into voice mail. In the voice mail feel free to leave a detailed message basically repeating that you want a message delivered to the senator about your feelings on this Bill, etc. Also tell them you are inquiring as to the senator’s position on S 911.

S.911 Title: is a bill to amend the Public Health Service Act to advance medical research and treatments into pediatric cancers, ensure patients and families have access to the current treatments and information regarding pediatric cancers, establish a population-based national childhood cancer database, and promote public awareness of pediatric cancers. You can view the bill in it’s entirety at www.thomas.gov just type in S 911.

Letters: For sample letters please go to this site where there are letters you can copy. If you could edit the letter to make it personal that would be great as this personalization does make an impact. Our governing officials need to know your stories.

Statistics and Facts

  • Cancer is the leading cause of death of children
  • Funding for the NCI (national Cancer Institute) and the NIH (National Institutes of Health) have been flat over the past 5 years which has put us further from our goal of finding a cure for childhood cancer
  • Over 12,500 children/teens are diagnosed and 2500 do not survive EVERY YEAR in our country

GREAT NEWS…..We are making a HUGE IMPACT!  Kate Shaffer with CureSearch who has been working diligently for S 911 to be passed along some very exciting news to TEAM UNITE!  Along with her thank you to all that you are doing for this cause she also mentioned that the day Senator Levin from Michigan was on our call sheet, he received 459 letters that were sent through the link that we provide in our daily posts (see letters below).  Of course we know that they are not all a result of our team but I’d say based on the fact that 1,756 have been sent total since the first of January, and he rec’d 459 in one day on the 19th of February, is a strong indicator that TEAM UNITE is being heard….THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT OF THESE YOUNG WARRIORS! TEAM UNITE ROCKS!!! Keep it up!

Strategy number 8 calls. Friday, February 22, 2008 (or anytime you can call!!!)

Today’s strategy will include a call to Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. of Oklahoma.  Senator Coburn has a long history of voting against any legislation that is disease specific.  It is important to note that senators with this position are not against our cause and it is not that they do not want to make children with cancer a priority. Rather, it is that they feel that the funding should come from the NCI and the NIH.  So our strategy to deal with the above position will be as follows.

We know that we will not change these senators’ positions and they will not cosponsor.  So, let’s try a different strategy.  When you encounter someone who has the position that they do not support funding for disease specific illness, try this: “We agree that the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) should be in a position to fund research for childhood cancer.  What we need is your help while you are figuring out how to accurately fund the NCI and the NIH.  We ask that you support and vote yes for S911 as an interim measure. Your yes vote will ensure that children can benefit from the research that is so critically needed along with the national database that will be funded with S911. (Funding for the national database is so important. All cancers diagnosed in more than 12,500 children each year will be documented and nuances chronicled, for every single child!  This will be essential in finding a cure and for future genetic studies. It will allow researchers access to the information they need to contact and get permission to use the pathology from each individual case in their research. This will give them a more comprehensive picture of what is working and what to look for in order to find a cure for childhood cancer).

Senate Bill 911’s current situation is that when it passed out of health committee the democrats red-lined the bill which means that the sponsor’s office sent a blast email stating that they would like this to pass unanimously, without a floor vote.  What happened is that the Republican side (Senator Enzi, the ranking member on the health committee) chose not to redline the bill and did not send out the email blast to the Republican members of the senate.  As a result S 911 could not pass by unanimous consent without a floor vote.  Some feel that the bill may go to the floor bundled with another package and pass that way but we do not have time to wait.

Nice Letter! Henry Tucker’s Grandma Eva wrote a wonderful letter to Congress that you can read from Michelles post on February 27th. The letter is also in the hands of every Health LA for every Senator’s office who is not yet a cosponsor of S.911. Because of this letter Team Unite now has the names of every health LA for the senators who are not yet cosponsors. Way to go Grandma Eva on both fronts!

Childhood Cancer in The News: This week Carl Levin from Michigan became S 911’s 52nd sponsor. Please visit http://curesearchnccf.blogspot.com/ where there is a post about the colloquy that took place on the Senate floor about childhood cancer this past Monday. If you click on the link to view the video, you will hear the entire speech. This floor speech was historic in that it is the first colloquy related specifically to childhood cancer to take place in the Senate.

Strategy number 10 calls Friday february 29, 2008 (or anytime you can call!!!)

Our strategy will be to continue working our senator list making calls, writing and emailing in order to secure cosponsors in the senate! If you have made it through the whole list from our earlier strategy reports congratulations! We are going to begin calling again. For those members of Team Unite still placing your first round of calls, thank you so much for doing this and please continue to call from the lists at your own pace and as you are able. Remember everyone’s ability to dedicate this time varies but EVERY call, letter and email helps! A link to a sample letter is included with this post along with a sample script for those just joining our team. If you have time please do personalize your letters so that your individual situation and story is heard.

I’m listing individuals below who we want to make a priority based on information I’ve received. We are being heard and making progress, that is what is important! IMPORTANT!* Please feel free to ask these folks if they saw Senator Reed and Senator Wyden and give them the link to the colloquy http://curesearchnccf.blogspot.com/. Also, many of the following have a history of not supporting legislation for disease specific funding. Please be sure to ask that S 911 be passed as an interim measure until they can find a way to adequately fund the NCI and NIH. Thank you!!!

In addition, I will have the chance to meet Kate Shafer from CureSearch and plan to meet with as many people as I can with respect to S.911. I’ll be reporting in again at the end of the week with a new strategy as well as what I learned from my trip.

Strategy: Great news! Although www.thomas.gov has not updated yet we did sign yet another cosponsor today! I received word from Kate with CureSearch that Senator Ken Salazar of Colorado is now a cosponsor of S 911. Great job Team Unite! The folks from CureSearch also had meetings today with Senator Coleman’s and Senator Reed’s staffs about S.911. One of the clear messages is to get more co sponsors on as soon as we can so I’ve assured Kate that we will focus our efforts based on their review of the list of non cosponsors and the following have been identified as good prospects to work on. The legislation, the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act (HR 1553).

Strategy number 15  starting wednesday March 19, 2008 or anytime you are able to call

Congratulations Team Unite, We have made it through our Senator list and we are now beginning to call the House of Representatives!  Our strategy will be three-fold and will involve focusing our efforts where we will have the most impact which is in contacting your local reps and then focusing in on the Energy and Commerce Committee as well as the Health Sub Committee.

1. First please click here to send a letter to your local representatives.   Please note, the first four individuals listed under #2 on our current strategy are in leadership positions on the Energy and Commerce committee which has jurisdiction over H.R. 1553. The message to those four representatives is to please review H.R. 1553, the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act and consider it for mark up by the committee.  There is not a letter on line at CureSearch that speaks to this so please customize accordingly for Reps Dingle, Barton, Pallone and Deal.  Thank you!

2. The following Representatives hold leadership positions on the Energy and Commerce committee which has jurisdiction over the bill. The message to these four individuals is to please review the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act and consider it for mark up by the committee. Please note that these individuals are not current cosponsors of the bill so feel free to ask for them to cosponsor as well but the real help they can provide to our cause is to get the bill marked up. That is the strategy here to influence them to get the bill to committee for mark up!

  • Representative John D. Dingell of Michigan, Chairman of the Energy & Commerce Committee, (202) 225-4071

Childhood Cancer in the News: As of today we have (55 + sponsors) for S 911 and 212 on the House side. (Judy Biggert (IL) and Rahm Emanuel (IL) signed on in the House) and Senator Wicker and Senator Specter both became cosponsors yesterday!  Keep it up Team Unite.

WE WILL MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

From CureSearch! The Power of Advocacy: your voice in action.  The childhood cancer community is a powerful force made up of passionate fighters for a cause that could not be more important. Many of you are using your experience as parent, survivor, grandparent, health professional, neighbor or concerned citizen to communicate a message of urgency about the need for funding for childhood cancer research. It is up to us to sound the alarm and challenge our elected officials to care enough about children with cancer to do something about it.

God bless Team Unite for joining forces to move forward to a cure!

Childhood Cancer in the News:

Dave Loebsack (IA) and Dan Boren (OK) became cosponsors yesterday on the House side.  We now have 215 (214 cosponsors and 1 sponsor) on the House side (HR 1553). Our goal is to get the bill marked up in committee which is the reason for this week’s strategy.

On the Senate side (S 911), we have 56 cosponsors on board and 1 sponsor. We need to get to 60.  Inside information says this could happen very soon (maybe this week!).  At that point the goal is to move the bill, along with other health care measures, to the floor for a vote! As we have learned, there is never a date certain in Congress and this week's schedule has to accommodate the Pope's visit as well but stay tuned everyone - we are close!

PLEASE REMEMBER:
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month!
Tell people about this now!

Strategy number 19  starting April 15, 2008 or anytime you are able to write

  1. First please click here to send a letter to your local representatives.
  2. The following Representatives hold leadership positions on the Energy and Commerce committee which has jurisdiction over the Conquer Childhood Cancer Bill. Please send a letter through the mail to these leaders asking that they please review the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act and consider it for mark up by the committee. Please note that these individuals are not current cosponsors of the bill so feel free to ask for them to cosponsor and vote yes as well but the real help they can provide to our cause is to get the bill marked up. That is the strategy here to influence them to get the bill to committee for mark up.

Hello,

I am part of a nationwide volunteer effort to gain support for HR 1553 The Conquer Childhood Cancer Act. I'm contacting you on behalf of constituents from your district who are unable to write as they are in hospitals fighting for their lives or the lives of their children.

We are asking that you please review the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act and consider it for mark up by the committee. As I know you are aware, funding for the NCI and the NIH over the past 5 years has been flat which has put us further from our goal of finding a cure for childhood cancer. We need this legislation passed in order for the pace and progress of life-saving research to continue.

This is a matter that affects every district in our country. Every year 12,500 children are diagnosed with cancer and over 2500 do not survive.<<<< INSERT YOUR PERSONAL STORY HERE!!!! >>>>>>.   So many others are going through this right now and many more will follow. These children and their families command our support and more importantly, they've earned it!

Nothing is more important to the future of our country than curing this beast that is killing our children. Please help us by getting this to the committee for mark up.  We also ask for your support in cosponsoring this bill. The children of America and their friends and family need you....Now. Please do not wait. Tomorrow will be too late for someone's child!

Respectfully,

Strategy #22 ribbon

God bless Team Unite for joining forces to move forward to a cure!

Childhood Cancer in the News;

Even Team Henry (Avid Cubs Fans) are proud of the White Sox today!  The following article is from The Columbus Dispatch dated Thursday, May 8, 2008,  “White Sox Turn Pink.”  Nick Swisher, John Danks and Toby Hall gave the Chicago White Sox a twist yesterday. The players dyed their facial hair hot pink to raise awareness for breast cancer and pay tribute to Mothers Day. A group of children from Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation, a national support group for those affected by pediatric cancer, watched as the trio took the pink plunge while seated on top of the White Sox’s dugout.  Some of the children helped with the hair coloring.  Swisher, who played at Ohio State, said the players will keep the pink dye through Sunday – maybe longer if they get hot.  “I guarantee it’ll stay (then).” He said.

Strategy number 22  starting Thursday May 8, 2008

Strategies: Please contact those on our strategy list who you may have missed.  In addition, over the next 10 days or so I’d like to switch our efforts up a bit and reach out to you and your CaringBridge followers requesting as many as possible help spread the word about September and Childhood Cancer Awareness month. This can only bring visibility to our cause and help raise awareness.  Please place a plea on your sites asking for everyone to call, write and email as many in the local and national media as possible.  We will continue this strategy through next week.

  1. Go back over past strategies and make any contacts you have missed.  Ask others to join Team Unite!
  2. Please write to your local/national newspapers and TV New stations/programs asking them to do something to recognize September as Childhood Cancer Awareness month.  Thank you for what you are doing to support the kids!

Links for a few media outlets you may contact.  Please send to any you feel would benefit our cause!  We need to spread the news to get the recognition that children’s cancer deserves in September!

Sample Letter to Press

My name is _____________________ and the reason I am contacting you is to ask that you please make your audience aware that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month.  The fact that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and that Gold Ribbons are the symbol of this goes largely unrecognized.  Please help make sure that everyone is aware of this from now on. Just visit the cancer unit of your local Children's Hospital and I guarantee you will meet children who will inspire you and change your life.  These brave young warriors deserve our support and more importantly, they’ve earned it!

(Insert your personal story here of how you’ve been affected!)

What topic could be more important than saving the lives of our children? Please report and raise awareness and ask that people do something special for the kids.  Every year cancer kills more young people between 1 and 20 years of age than asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and AIDS, combined yet in the past 20 years only one new cancer drug has been approved for pediatric use.  In addition, only 3 percent of the budget of the National Cancer Institute goes toward childhood cancer research.

My request is that you help get the word out that the gold ribbon is the symbol for Childhood Cancer Awareness and request that each individual consider wearing a gold ribbon in support of the children out there fighting for their lives.  You have the power to communicate this to the public and we are asking for your support and help.  Thank you!

Sincerely,

Hello, my name is, Your Name. The reason for my call is that I’d like to leave a brief message for  Senator __________________________, can you help me?  Great!  I would like to leave a message letting the senator know that I am part of a national volunteer group helping cancer patients and their families.  We are calling today on behalf of the constituents in your district who are unable to call themselves because they are fighting for their lives to conquer a diagnosis of childhood cancer.  Please make the Senator aware of my call and to ask that the senator please cosponsor and vote yes for S.911 The Conquer Childhood Cancer Act (include why this important to you…make it personal). Please ask the senator to cosponsor and vote yes for S 911.

***Sample Letter, Email and/or Fax for S 911 (non-cosponsors)*** Please make this letter personal! Thank you Team Unite!

Volunteer for H.R. S 911

Dear Senator  _______________,

My name is ____________________and I am part of a nationwide volunteer effort to gain support for S 911, The Conquer Childhood Cancer Act. I'm contacting you on behalf of constituents from your district who are unable to write as they are in hospitals fighting for their lives or the lives of their children.

We are asking that you please cosponsor and vote yes for S 911, The Conquer Childhood Cancer Act. Funding for the NCI and the NIH over the past 5 years has been flat which has put us further from our goal of finding a cure for childhood cancer. We need this legislation passed in order for the pace and progress of life-saving research to continue.  The money authorized in this bill, $30 Million every year for the next five years, will allow pediatric oncology researchers to investigate critical questions about childhood cancer and to translate these findings into life saving treatments.

This is a matter that affects every district in our country. Every year 12,500 children are diagnosed with cancer and over 2500 do not survive.  So many others are going through this right now and many more will follow. These children and their families command our support and more importantly, they've earned it!

We need your support and ask that you be a leader in the fight against childhood cancer. The children in your district and across the country deserve the very best that scientific research has to offer and we hope you will use your elected office to be a voice for children. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Childhood Cancer In the News:

September 13th is now “National Childhood Cancer Awareness Day”

Washington, D.C. - September 13, 2008 will now be recognized as "National Childhood Cancer Awareness Day" as a result of a Senate resolution introduced by U.S. Senators Wayne Allard (R-Colo.) and Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY).

"Never before in history has the dream of eliminating childhood cancer been so attainable, yet seemed so elusive," said Senator Allard. "We live in a nation where the effectiveness of treatments and technology offer hope to children who dream of a bright future. Each case of childhood cancer is a very personal tragedy that can strike any family with children, at anytime, anywhere. In setting aside September 13th to recognize this battle on cancer, we continue of our efforts to draw attention to the victims of childhood cancer and the great work of the families and organizations who continue the fight."

"We have made tremendous strides in the fight against childhood cancer, but far too many children still suffer and lose their lives to this illness. The more we know as a nation the better able we will be to prevent and treat the disease and help those who are battling and surviving pediatric cancers. National Childhood Cancer Awareness Day is an opportunity to reach out to all Americans with the facts about childhood cancer, and this day will be an important symbol of our commitment on all days to find a cure," said Senator Clinton.

Childhood cancer is the number one disease killer and the second overall leading cause of death of children in the United States. More than 10,000 children under the age of 15 in the United States are diagnosed with cancer annually.

Team Unite strategy starting Wednesday May 28, 2008

  1. As we anticipate the bill going to the floor for a vote in the next few weeks (we hope!), we will now focus our efforts toward getting appropriations (money) support once the bill passes.  Enclosed are sample letters to the house and senate.  Please contact the members of congress where you live by mail or email (feel free to call too), using the enclosed sample letter as a guide. Please customize as much as possible.  The goal being to ask cosponsors as well as non-cosponsors to  contact (and make a strong case with) the Chairman Ranking Member of both the house and senate for significant funding in the FY 2009 Defense Appropriations bill for clinical trials for pediatric cancer research (details below).
  2. Team Uniter’s in CO and NY and anyone else who would like to, please take a moment to send a thank you note to Sen. Allard and/or Sen. Clinton re: the National Day of Awareness resolution (see today’s news above).
  3. Please use today’s news in an effort to continue promoting September as National Childhood Cancer Awareness month. Continue to write letters and to call local and national press and request that they plan now to recognize the month of September as “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month” and September 13th which is now officially, "National Childhood Cancer Awareness Day"!

As we eagerly await information on how Team Unite families did in DC, I’d like to keep the momentum they’ve created going by posting the following Strategy.

Thank you Team Unite for your continued passion and dedication to these brave young warriors!

Strategies: Please continue to contact your members of the Senate and ask them to support and vote yes on S911. Ask for cosponsors and thank those who support us.  Ask that they do anything within their power in order to get the Bill to the floor for a vote.  In addition, please once again reach out to everyone requesting as many as possible help spread the word about September and Childhood Cancer Awareness month.

This can only bring visibility to our cause and help raise awareness.  Please place a plea on your sites asking for everyone to call, write and email as many in the local and national media as possible.  We will continue this strategy through next week.

1. Please call your Senators and either thank them for their support or ask that they get on board in support of S911. Ask that they get the bill to the floor ASAP!

For the most up to date listing of cosponsors please click the following links:

2. Please write to your local/national newspapers and TV New stations/programs asking them to do something to recognize September as Childhood Cancer Awareness month.  Thank you for what you are doing to support the kids!

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Childhood Cancer In the News:

Sign the Petition

Today we call attention to a childhood cancer petition drive being sponsored by a grieving father within the childhood cancer community, Bob Piniewski. Bob’s son AJ was diagnosed with Burkitt’s, or non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma on Father’s Day, 2007 and passed away in January at age 14. AJ was a gifted athlete and his grace and tenacity throughout his eight-month battle with cancer was in inspiration to all who knew him.

Bob’s petition idea is as simple as it is powerful; he’d like us all to help him gather one million signatures to present to all major national media, to urge them to devote more time and energy toward conquering childhood cancer.

Also on his site is provided an opportunity for parents whose children were diagnosed with cancer – living or deceased – to describe their children, the lessons they taught them, and how these courageous kids impacted the lives of those around them, just as AJ did. These will be compiled into a book that is sure to both raise eyebrows and open hearts.

While a goal of one million signatures might seem like quite a reach, Bob explains the math like this: 500 visitors to AJ’s site, each getting 20 others to sign. Each of these 20 then recruits ten more. Those ten each get five, who each get two. That makes one million.

You can visit the petition site at: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/CureChildhoodCancer

Learn more about AJ’s story at: http://curechildhoodcancer.blogspot.com
http://www.carepages.com/ care page name – Ajsspace.

This petition initiative has a theme, and it bears some reflection: YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE.

Is there a hold on S911?

When S911 came out of the Help Committee, the Democratic leadership “hot-lined” the bill meaning an e mail was sent to all Democratic Senators asking for their agreement to pass the bill by unanimous consent. There was no opposition expressed by Democrats. The Republican leadership was advised that there would be objection to passing the bill by unanimous consent and because of that the bill was not “hot-lined” on the Republican side. The name or names of the Senators who object to the bill is not public information although there is much speculation.

When the bill is brought to the floor, either as a single measure or more likely, along with a group of other bills, the Senators who object to the bill may attempt to filibuster. However, there is enough support for S911 and the other bills it may be packaged with that it has a very good chance of passing in the Senate despite the objection of some Senators.

S911 positives

  • Non Controversial
  • Bi-partisan
  • Passed the House unanimously
  • More than enough support to pass on the Senate side
  • May be “bundled together with other legislation that should pass and is similar in that it is not controversial - could go to the floor towards the end of July in this format)

Thank you Team Unite for your continued passion and dedication to these brave young warriors!

Strategies: We need to secure the money now! Requests for appropriation funding to support childhood cancer research have been submitted to the Defense appropriation subcommittee, the Energy and Water appropriation subcommittee, and the Labor Health and Human Services appropriation subcommittee.

The largest request and the appropriation bill most likely to pass before the end of this year is the Defense appropriation bill. This bill is being marked up next week!  Let’s all pull together and write, email, call, etc. these individuals requesting significant funding in the FY 2009 Defense Appropriations bill for clinical trials for pediatric cancer research.

My request is that you help get the word out that the gold ribbon is the symbol for Childhood Cancer Awareness and request that each individual consider wearing a gold ribbon in support of the children out there fighting for their lives.  You have the power to communicate this to the public and we are asking for your support and help.  Thank you!

Sincerely,

CureSearch Praises Passage of Landmark
"Conquer Childhood Cancer Act"
by Unanimous Consent in the United States Senate

Children with Cancer and Their Families to Benefit from Legislation

July 17, 2008 (Bethesda, MD) - CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation salutes the United States Senate for its passage of the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act, which promises to significantly increase federal investment into childhood cancer research.

The bill, first introduced in the Senate by Senators Jack Reed (D-RI) and Norm Coleman (R-MN), passed by unanimous consent, echoing a similar 416-0 vote June 12th in the U.S. House of Representatives. Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) requested, and received, this unanimous consent on the Senate floor.

The bill authorizes $30 million annually over five years, providing funding for collaborative pediatric cancer clinical trials research, to create a population-based national childhood cancer database, and to further improve public awareness and communication regarding available treatment and research for children with cancer and their families.

"Too many young people's lives were cut short by cancer, but their hopes were not," said Reed. "We have made great advances in treating cancer, but there is still much more to be done. The Conquer Childhood Cancer Act will deliver much needed hope and support to children and families battling cancer and more resources for vital pediatric cancer research programs."

Senator Coleman, an original sponsor, noted that the legislation passed unanimously in both Houses of Congress, and lauded the overwhelming bi-partisan support of the measure, which addresses a critical national health issue that is finally receiving the attention it deserves.

"Passage of the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act in the Senate is a monumental step in the fight against childhood cancer," said Coleman. "I am proud that my colleagues were able to come together and pass legislation that will provide the resources to not only support children and families with childhood cancer, but also find a cure."

CureSearch supports the life-saving research of the Children's Oncology Group, the world's premier cancer research collaborative. Treating 90 percent of children with cancer, the Children's Oncology Group includes more than 5,000 experts in childhood cancer research and treatment, located at more than 200 leading children's and university hospitals across North America.

"The Conquer Childhood Cancer Act allows for translation of the very best research discoveries into clinical evaluation and practice, in order to improve the cure rates for all children with cancer," stated Gregory Reaman, MD, Chair of the Children's Oncology Group.

"On behalf of my colleagues in the Children's Oncology Group and the children with cancer and their families who are our partners in clinical research, we thank our leaders in the Senate. Only research cures childhood cancer."

"We applaud the leadership of Senators Reed and Coleman and their colleagues in the Senate who through the passage of this bill have made finding the cure for childhood cancer an urgent national priority. Together with their colleagues in the House, Congress has given childhood cancer the attention and support that is long overdue and much needed," said Stacy Pagos Haller, Executive Director of CureSearch.

Having passed both the House of Representatives and the Senate unanimously, the bill now heads to the White House, where President Bush is expected to sign it into law.

As noted in Strategy 26, the appropriations were being marked up this week so Team Unite will update ASAP to see what else we can do in the short term or if this has already occurred.  Here is the Defense committee contacts and information:

DEFENSE APPROPRIATIONS

20 million – Army RDTE- To support pediatric cancer research and clinical trials (the other 10 million will be from other appropriations we may target in a future strategy)

  • The funding will be used to enhance important ongoing clinical trials, support the creation of significant, new clinical trials and prevent the discontinuation of critical childhood cancer trials, benefiting children of military families, civilian DOD employees, and other children afflicted with childhood cancer.

And, to support existing DOD translational research in high risk childhood cancer targeting new agents against highly resistant, poor prognosis diseases.

God Bless Team Unite!!!!

More updates will be on the way very soon with respect to appropriations.  We are attaching the document that states where the money comes from and will update with next steps very soon. :)
